Tolerability

In principle, the combined pill is suitable for all women of childbearing age - from their teens until the menopause. Even so, the combined pill is not the optimum method of contraception for all women.

Contraindications for contraception using the combined pill

The combined pill should not be used as a method of contraception by women who are affected by certain risk factors and diseases. This should be clarified in consultation with a physician. It is important for your own health that you describe exactly any past or present diseases, including breast or abdominal surgery, and tell the physician about any medication you take regularly or certain diseases forthcoming in your family that are related to risk factors associated with taking the combined pill.

Individual risk factors include smoking, overweight, vascular diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes and migraine. They increase the risk of side effects.

The combined pill is not suitable for pregnant women, nursing mothers or women who suffer from estrogen intolerance. However, your physician can inform you about alternative methods of contraception.

Possible side effects

Most versions of the combined pill available today have low doses and are well tolerated by many women. Nevertheless, as with any drug, side effects are possible. Especially during the first three months some women complain of headaches, breast tenderness, nausea or spotting. It is also possible that a woman might miss a period. However, if she has been taking the combined pill according to the instructions given in the package insert, and she was not suffering from nausea or diarrhea at the time, this is not necessarily a sign that she is pregnant. In addition, there are other, rare side effects like thrombosis, for example, which usually occur in combination with individual risk factors.

Every preparation's package insert contains information about which side effects can occur and how serious the risk is. Your physician and the staff at your pharmacy can also give you information. You should always seek medical advice if you notice you are experiencing side effects.
